My work reflects my need to communicate the burden of the human condition. Each of my pieces strives to capture a figurative moment in time, a kind of emotional landscape. In a sense, the work represents essences from several turning points in my life.
In choosing to work with mainly bronze and rock, I am able to address society's tendency to delineate and separate; to categorize and label the world. My work attempts to break through these illusory disparities. The contrast between the smooth, fluid lines of my tenuated bodies and the natural rock actually creates a sense of unity and oneness for me. I love to play with the concept of the two surfaces working together, to create an aesthetic whole. To me, this contrast is the struggle of life itself. As I search for the rock that will pair with the body of each individual piece, it becomes obvious that the humanly created world and nature can find an equilibrium.
I find creative pleasure in working with the surface of the bronze. In essence, each piece is born again and again, until its final resonant surface emerges. Reworking the finish is an important element of the work for me. As the bronze becomes more vivid, the raw nature of the rock becomes more apparent. Each element of the sculpture then takes its true form and develops its character. As a final enhancement, I add a patina, which is dependent on the ultimate mood I want to infuse into each piece, bringing the figures into a vibrant living space.
I create sculptural abstractions through my images; capturing elements of change, transformation and evolution. With life comes death and renewal, encompassed by both time and space. The reminiscence of what once existed as a living organism, still remains, part of a living landscape in an abstract form. Through my representations of driftwood, I hope to marry past and current realities, translating this experience and capturing its ever lasting magnificence.
